Since the internet came of age in the late 1990’s, we’ve systematically watched product after product, service after service, and industry after industry transform for this new age of information sharing. One of the latest industries to get shaken up is one that is very close to home. This would be the video rental industry.
Now that internet bandwidth is affordable, and media streamers are main stream, it is only inevitable that websites like Netflix would rise. Similar to how the rise of DVDs lead to the downfall of VHS, and penalties for not rewinding, sites like Netflix are spelling out the end for video rental stores, late fees, and possibly even DVDs.
Netflix has become the poster child of alternative video rental services, but it is not the only one. Since they were founded, many online video rental services have come and gone. If we are to learn anything from history, it is that eventually someone will be innovative enough to come up with a website like Netflix, but better.
